School Overview

School Info

Founded in 1898, and affiliated with what is now New York-Presbyterian Hospital since 1927, Weill Medical College of Cornell University is among the top-ranked clinical and medical research centers in the country. In addition to offering degrees in medicine, Weill Cornell also has PhD programs in biomedical research and education at the Weill Graduate School of Medical Sciences, and with neighboring Rockefeller University and the Sloan-Kettering Institute, has established a joint MD-PhD program for students to intensify their pursuit of Weill Cornell's triple mission of education, research, and patient care.

Curriculum

The first year and second year of study consist of six basic science courses and Medicine, Patients and Society. The core basic science courses are sequential, integrated, interdisciplinary block courses that employ problem-based learning (PBL) in small groups with the faculty. PBL emphasizes active learning and requires the student first to identify issues needed to solve a medical problem, then to seek out the information needed to solve the problem, and then to reconvene in small groups to apply the information learned. Lectures are few and emphasize the conceptual framework of a field. Anatomic dissection and experimental laboratories complete the learning experience. The third year is dedicated to clinical learning and emphasizes the core clerkships, including Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics-Gynecology, Psychiatry, Neurology, and Primary Care. In these courses, students are assigned to clinical in-patient and out-patient services at New York-Presbyterian Medical Center and throughout the network of clinical affiliates. The fourth year centers on completion of clinical requirements as well as electives. Each year approximately half of the fourth-year class spends time abroad, typically in Cornell-funded programs that combine clinical care and research in the third world: South America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia.

Facilities

The Medical College is divided into 20 academic departments: seven focus on the sciences underlying clinical medicine; and thirteen encompass the study, treatment, and prevention of human diseases, and maternity care. In addition to its affiliation with New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Medical College and Graduate School maintains major affiliations with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Hospital for Special Surgery, as well as with the metropolitan-area institutions that constitute New York-Presbyterian Healthcare Network.

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
