School Overview

School Info

Case is a leader in medical education and curricular innovation. Case has a new integrated curriculum of medicine and public health awareness. The new Case system of medical education emphasizes the interplays between the biology of disease and social and behavioral context of illness, the care of individual patients and public health, and clinical medicine and population medicine.

Curriculum

The University Program seeks to create physician-scholars who are leaders in science, practice and health care policy. Students learn primarily through small group discussions, large group experiences, lectures, interactive anatomy sessions, clinical skills training and patient-based activities. The learning process is supplemented by a rich array of electronic and Web-based resources. The environment encourages scientific inquiry and self-directed learning. Students are immersed in a graduate-school atmosphere characterized by flexibility, independent study and collegial interaction with faculty. Students complete in-depth, mentored research experiences based on their individual interests, with the goal of understanding the scientific process so that they may critically read and analyze scientific literature and know how to formulate hypotheses. These lifelong learning skills are essential in both clinical and research-oriented practices. All students also receive mentoring and career counseling as members of one of four academic societies.

Facilities

The Case School of Medicine is the largest biomedical research institution in Ohio, as measured by funding received from the National Institutes of Health, the country's largest funding agency of biomedical research. The medical school receives more NIH funding than all other Ohio medical schools combined and is in the top tier of all medical schools in the country in receiving such funding. For students, these facts translate into numerous opportunities to work side by side with investigators who are leaders in their fields.

"Why do you want to stay in Cleveland? (I am from here. It kind-of caught me off-guard but I was able to come up with an answer.)" More from this Member | Report Response

"What was your biggest challenge in college? Tell me about a time when you worked with small groups in an academic setting. (This was my student interviewer. These were the two hardest questions he asked, after that we just had a conversation)" More from this Member | Report Response

"Why do you want to practice medicine?" More from this Member | Report Response

"The only real question was "Why case," and the rest was mostly conversation." More from this Member | Report Response

"Tell me about yourself. (It seems like interviews always start with this one, so I was pleased to have worked out a solid answer during my mock, which also helped me to feel comfortable and to keep in mind the points about myself that I wanted to highlight)" More from this Member | Report Response

"What makes you think you're ready to commit to medicine?" More from this Member | Report Response

"Faculty: Basic stuff about my experiences. Why medicine? What are you looking for in a medical school? Do you really think early clinical experiences make better doctors? Note: This was supposed to be an open file interview, but my interviewer either hadn't read my file or was pretending (s)he hadn't. Very hard to read reactions, asked me some questions that I felt were just testing me." More from this Member | Report Response

"Looks like you did some teaching. Why switch to medicine?" More from this Member | Report Response

"Open file for first interview with faculty, closed file for student interview. The questions were generally pretty conversational and nothing too intense. I think they really did just want to get to know you as a person/future physician, with one minor caveat: just because it's conversational, doesn't mean you should stop selling yourself. In fact, I would ensure that you work extra hard to sell yourself. Personally, I find that with interviewers that are super-nice, I have a tendency to assume, oh hey, we're all buddies and since we finished on such a happy note, I'm sure the interview went well. Make sure you leave that interview showing them *exactly* why you think you'd be a great fit at Case, and keep repeating that over and over, no matter how many laughs/giggles you guys share." About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
