School Overview

School Info

Dartmouth Medical School educates outstanding leaders prepared to transform medicine and science. The school aspires to be the best in the world at expanding knowledge and using it wisely to improve health, all done in the context of the tradition of collegiality of Dartmouth and the values its community honors. We are committed to the challenges of discovery and innovation and to their application to health care that meets the needs and wants of patients and society.

Curriculum

DMS's New Directions curriculum is as dynamic as the world of medicine itself. Each year, Dartmouth reviews all four years of the curriculum to keep pace with medicine's rapid advances and complexities, and to assure that you develop competencies in six broad areas: medical knowledge; clinical skills; interpersonal and communications skills; professionalism; personal assessment and improvement in the practice environment; and managing patient care in a complex health-care system. When you leave Dartmouth, you will have the tools, the skills, and the attitudes necessary for a lifetime of learning one of the realities and rewards of practicing medicine in the 21st century.

Facilities

The primary teaching site for DMS students is Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC), one of two rural academic medical centers in the country. A Level 1 Trauma Center, DHMC serves a patient population of 1.6 million, drawn from across Northern New England. DHMC is home to the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, one of only 39 National Cancer Institute designated comprehensive cancer care centers in the country. Other important centers at DHMC include the Children's Hospital at Dartmouth and the Center for Shared Decision Making. Supporting these centers are two additional major research sites, the Borwell and Rubin Research Buildings. DMS receives more than $131 million annually in sponsored research. The near future will see the opening of three added centers, an Advanced Imaging Center, the Translational Research Building, and a new home for the Center for the Evaluative Clinical Sciences.

We ended up talking about her research, her children, my community work. The only question she asked was why I wanted to go into medicine (which followed up my question to why she wanted to do research. About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
