School Overview

School Info

The College of Medicine continues to successfully educated leaders in medicine and science who will increase understanding of the cures and causes of human disease and provide expert, compassionate and culturally sensitive health care. Each year approximately 2,000 highly qualified candidates apply for 24 opening in the Drew/UCLA Medical Education Program. Our students represent the full range of gender, ethnic, and educational diversity of our society which contributes to the strength of our institution. Students admitted into the Drew/UCLA Medical Education Program benefit from the best of Drew and UCLA in a combined curriculum.

Curriculum

A unique component of the Drew/UCLA Medical Education program is the longitudinal primary care clinical experience. Students in the 3rd year spend 1 day a week at a primary care clinic located in an underserved area of Los Angeles. In addition, students are required to develop a primary care research thesis proposal and project with a faculty mentor that will be presented at the annual research colloquium just prior to graduation. The fourth year, called the Urban Underserved College, begins with a one week time commitment designed to hone clinical skills and prepare students for residency. The mentorship program in the 4th year allows students to work closely with faculty to ensure appropriate career and academic guidance and successful completion of the research thesis.

Facilities

The first and second years of the medical program, on the Westwood campus of UCLA, stresses the development of a firm foundation in the basic sciences with an emphasis on clinical applications. The third and fourth years of the program are spent on the Drew campus and in clinics at King/Drew and other UCLA-affiliated hospitals, where our small student-to-faculty ratio allows for students to benefit from intensive interaction with supervising faculty and to have hands-on clinical experience in treating patients. In addition, students rotate through a high volume, high acuity, inner city hospital which gives them experience treating a variety of disease processes.

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
