School Overview

School Info

Eastern Virginia Medical School is dedicated to medical and health education, biomedical research, and the enhancement of health care in the Hampton Roads region. Our primary goal is the education of compassionate, skillful physicians to serve in a variety of health care and academic settings. Excellence in patient care requires a firm foundation in the medical sciences and clinical skills, combined with an empathetic attitude and the ability to apply scientific methods to the solution of medical problems.

Curriculum

The curriculum is designed to educate compassionate, skillful physician-scientists, with an emphasis on preparation of physicians for residency training in the primary care disciplines. Excellence in patient care requires a firm foundation in the medical sciences and clinical skills, combined with an empathetic attitude and the ability to apply the scientific method to the solution of medical problems. The logical continuum of educational experiences leads to graduation of physicians who have the knowledge and skills to advise patients on the maintenance of good health, to diagnose and treat illness, and to appreciate how illness affects their patients.

Facilities

The main campus is part of the Eastern Virginia Medical Center, which also includes Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, the region's primary tertiary care center, and Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, a full-service, acute care facility which serves as the regional referral center for pediatrics. Campus facilities include: the Edward E. Brickell Medical Sciences Library, a state-of-the-art facility with an advanced information infrastructure allowing access to a host of digital resources. The Library opened in March 2000, and houses the original Moorman Memorial Library collection, a computer lab, a computer classroom, historical collections, archives, and group and individual study seating.

[Also, when asked how many people are uninsured in America, I cited the popular '45 million' figure, but then I added that "According to a 3-year-old study done by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, in any given 3-month period that figure is closer to 73 million. That's about 1 in 3 Americans. If the patient still wants to have an abortion and is competent enough to make a decision, then the best choice of action is to do whatever the patient wants to do)." "During WWII, illegal medical experiments were performed in Nazi Germany on Jewish prisoners where they tortured and sometimes killed their subjects. Some authorized people have read the results of these experiments and found that the Germans uncovered such advanced scientific knowledge that scientists today still have not quite caught up to some of the discoveries. The results of these German experiments have not been released to the public due to the brutalities associated with them. Some on the one hand believe that it is wrong to release the knowledge because of the horrible acts that were performed by those scientists. On the other hand, some push for the knowledge to be released because the knowledge discovered then still cannot be rediscovered today and that by releasing the information, since it will save lives today, those Jewish prisoners who died will not have died in vain. What do you like most about this school?

"Facilities are somewhat modern" | Report Response

"The system of honors/high pass/pass/fail fosters a team learning environment where people will post study guides, helpful material from the masters program. You'll have a class of very unique people from different backgrounds - so get to know the ones that you do get along with and stick with them." | Report Response

"Close knit, community oriented, You feel like you make a difference at the school and in the community, you don't have to move for rotations 3rd and 4th year" | Report Response

"Most faculty are nice and approachable, surgeons are very approachable" | Report Response

What do you like least about this school?

"Faculty often with little or no regard for the betterment of students and instead prefer their convenience (eg clerkship placements, mandatory attendance at lectures simply for presenter ego)" | Report Response

"Random scheduling. Some days you have class starting at 9, othertimes it's 8, 10, 11. Sometimes, it's mandatory and other times it's scheduled for online lectures. The online lectures vary in quality - can be very well done or very poorly executed and you end up having to use the powerpoint/objectives and finding your own resources to learn it yourself (google, textbooks, etc)." | Report Response

"Children's Hospital still has paper charts, but moving to electronic system soon." | Report Response

"Physiology department is without the worst excuse for an academic department. Absolutely don't care about teaching or helping students." | Report Response

Please provide any other general comments on your school

"The school itself is pretty small; testing center opened in 2015 is 0.5-0.6 miles from the actual campus so getting to tests the day of - you have to drive over and just park on nearby residential neighborhoods. It's a hassle compared to the old system: where tests are held on campus, you bring your own laptops into the lecture room and take the proctored exam (you have much more time before/after to study on campus or prepare for class after exams)." | Report Response

"Excellent professors and top notch education. People come in with lower scores compared to national, but board scores are often 1 SD above national mean." | Report Response

"Not very strong in the pre-clinical years, but very highly regarded in the clinical years. Chair of Surgery is also president of ACS (LD Britt). Lots of pull there." | Report Response

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
