School Overview

School Info

Georgetown University School of Medicine, established in 1851, is part of the oldest Catholic and Jesuit-sponsored University in the United States. Committed to training physicians in all dimensions of the delivery of humane patient care, the School of Medicine works in association with the 407-bed Georgetown University Hospital and nine affiliated federal and community hospitals in the Washington metropolitan area.

Curriculum

Georgetown's four-year curriculum combines departmentally based basic science courses and laboratory work, prescribed clinical clerkships, multidisciplinary courses and conferences, and electives that provide the student a well-rounded, comprehensive curriculum. The intent is to prepare our students for not only the clinical and biomedical aspects of patient care, but also the social , ethical, and community-based challenges for effectively provide that care. Courses in the first two years focus on the development of fundamental knowledge concerning the body's normal and altered structure and functions. Small-group teaching and problem-based presentations have replaced a portion of the large class lectures. Exposure to patient assessment and care along with community service and advocacy opportunities begin in the first year, and continue throughout all four years. In the third year, clinical clerkships stress the skills required to acquire and interpret patient-based data, while the fourth year further develops skills in patient management, including rotations in ambulatory care settings. Twenty-four weeks of electives are available during this final year, four of which may be used for vacation.

Facilities

In July 2000, Georgetown University and MedStar Health, a not for profit organization of seven Baltimore and Washington hospitals, entered into a clinical partnership to provide management of clinical care and clinical education at Georgetown University Hospital. The hospital was founded in 1898. The Medical Center provides an environment that promotes training and educational opportunities, and includes a Concentrated Care Center with a modern 12-room surgical suite, 24 pre-operative and post-operative surgical suites, and state-of-the-art emergency, X-ray, and transplant facilities. The campus also contains a health science library, basic and pre-clinical science buildings, classrooms, laboratories, and a research building, which opened in early 1995. Georgetown also offers opportunities for the overall development of its student body. The Yates Memorial Field House contains swimming facilities, jogging, and multi- and single-purpose courts, and offers many athletic programs. The Leavey Center provides a focus for faculty and student activities for conferences, the performing arts, a variety of dining establishments, and guest quarters.

What are your suggestions for the admissions office?

"I wish we had opportunities to speak to more students. There was ample time to talk with the M2s at lunch, but it would have been nice to hear from some students in their clinical years as well. I only got the chance to speak to a few students, and a little more diversity of experiences at Georgetown would have been nice." More from this Member | Report Response

"They need a greeter at the front of the building. Their speeches for us were not quite friendly and somewhat patronizing and cynical. "You are top scholars, but you are all the same!"" More from this Member | Report Response

"A sign or greeter at the front door would have been nice. I was on time, but walked into an empty admissions corridor when I arrived." More from this Member | Report Response

"Clearer directions to the Medical School would have been a plus. Student hosting also wasn't set up early enough for me to take advantage. Both of these things would have helped!" More from this Member | Report Response

"Have a more organized tour. We only glimpsed the anatomy lab and some classrooms, and didn't see the hospital at all." More from this Member | Report Response

"Possibly have back-ups if a dean cant come speak" More from this Member | Report Response

"Show anatomy labs to the students! Tour was very disorganized." More from this Member | Report Response

"The ~3 hours of presentations by the admissions office and faculty carried on a bit too long in my opinion. Also, the sample lecture was very monotonous and was not representative of the typical lecturer, according to some of the students we spoke with." More from this Member | Report Response

"Keep Mrs. Sullivan's talk in the interview day: it was by far the best discussion I've been a part of regarding medical school admissions. I would suggest getting rid of the grumpy guy who "greets" the interviewees, or maybe getting him a bigger cup of coffee in the morning. Also, with all the talk about the excellent rotations and how prepared Georgetown grads are, let us talk to some M3's and M4's. Meeting the 1st and 2nd year students was awesome, but they have such a limited knowledge base as far as the clinical rotations go, and that's what I wanted to know more about." More from this Member | Report Response

"Name tags and folders would be nice. Also seating us in a room with tables, instead of the awkward fishbowl room would be nice" More from this Member | Report Response

"Give the interviewees a schedule of the day's events, and name tags." More from this Member | Report Response

"None - you did a wonderful job!" More from this Member | Report Response

"From beginning to end, the interview day is impersonal and disappointing. It would be nice to be greeted by someone, or better yet, be introduced to the program by someone with a somewhat up-beat attitude. Everyone with whom we interacted was rude and unfriendly." More from this Member | Report Response

"The interview was awesome. I was very impressed with the culture and philosophy of the school!" More from this Member | Report Response

"Confirmation emails! Also, make sure tour guides who actually know the school well are available." More from this Member | Report Response

"Please provide reading materials for the students awkwardly sitting in the "fishbowl"" More from this Member | Report Response

"Provide students with personalized schedules for the day. It reduces anxiety." More from this Member | Report Response

"The interview coordinator seemed very unenthusiastic, and the admissions director seemed very very n" More from this Member | Report Response

"Expedite the admissions process, be more responsive to emails" More from this Member | Report Response

"No one was there to great us in the morning which was bizarre. You basically just go sit in the room" More from this Member | Report Response

"I didn't get to meet Mrs. Sullivan or hear her speech, which I was disappointed about, but I suppose" More from this Member | Report Response

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
