School Info

The first university-based dental school in the country, Harvard Dental School was founded in 1867. It was also the first to be established in close affiliation with a medical school (Harvard Medical School) and to make the full scholarly and scientific resources of a university available to dental education. In 1940, under President James B. Conant, the School was reorganized as Harvard School of Dental Medicine to place stronger emphasis on the biological basis of oral medicine and to institute multidisciplinary programs of dental research. A unique feature of the curriculum placed dental students in joint classes with medical students for two years of basic science and pathophysiology and for an introduction to clinical medicine on the wards of Harvard teaching hospitals and in community health centers. In 1957, the School of Dental Medicine was awarded National Institute of Dental Research training grant funding and began to expand and enhance its postdoctoral educational programs, combining advanced clinical and biomedical research training for dentists planning careers in academic dentistry. Several postdoctoral programs were developed under the leadership of former dean, Dr. Paul Goldhaber. These include a four-year Doctor of Medical Sciences in Oral Biology program; a five and six-year Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/MD/General Surgery program; and a group of three and four-year, joint-degree programs combining advanced clinical training and research in health-care systems, health policy or biomedical sciences.

Curriculum

The DMD Curriculum is presented in a problem-based approach in which concepts are mastered through group discussion and analysis of real-patient cases. Courses are interdisciplinary, and small group tutorial sessions augment material from lectures, laboratories and independent study. The educational process is designed to encourage students to become responsible for their own learning and to develop the skills to become a competent lifelong learner. In the first two years of the DMD program, students study the basic biomedical sciences with faculty at both the Dental School and the Harvard Medical School (HMS). The principles of this curriculum are based on the HSDM philosophy that dentistry is a field of medicine and that oral health is part of overall health. For this reason, the School is committed to the belief that dental students at HSDM should participate wholly in the curriculum at HMS. Curriculum content in the first two years includes parallel dental courses that help make the connections between oral health and general health.

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
