School Overview

School Info

As the only medical school in Indiana and the second largest medical school in the country, we have created programs and facilities that serve a broad spectrum of student and faculty interests and needs. Our educational program is hosted on nine campuses throughout Indiana; it boasts an innovative, competency-based curriculum, new facilities for patient care, research, and education on many of our campuses, and nationally funded and recognized research programs. Our students, residents, fellows, faculty and staff members are members of a team, working to create a professional environment that values its members and the patients and communities it serves.

Curriculum

The first and second years of medical school are a combination of classroom and clinical experiences. Small group discussions and problem-based learning are used to help students translate basic sciences into practical clinical applications. The number of hours spent in classroom instruction varies from campus to campus, but the average is about 27 hours of instruction a week during the first year and 26 hours a week during the second year. This two-year science course bridges the basic sciences to clinical medicine. Year one focuses on the doctor-patient relationship. Learning occurs in small groups of eight students and two preceptors. Discussions explore themes such as the patient as a person, normal life cycle development, doctor-patient communication, ethics and the community and cultural influences that affect the doctor-patient relationship. Each group meets throughout the year and students conduct several patient interviews. The clinical years are what all medical students anticipate, a time when lectures and laboratories translate into patient care. The IU School of Medicine students have wide access to a variety of clinical settings. Numerous hospitals and outpatient facilities in Indianapolis and throughout the state provide students with valuable clinical experiences as they rotate through their electives. Fourth-year students have the unique opportunity to pursue electives for seven months -- a large amount of time compared with many other U.S. medical schools. The School follows an evaluation system that includes grades of honors, high pass, pass and fail. Students also are evaluated on achievement in the nine competency areas. Two transcripts are awarded to students upon graduation; one details grades while the other details students' progress through the competencies. In order to be to be eligible for graduation, students must pass all course requirements, competency requirements, and Steps 1 and 2 of the United States Medical Licensure Examination (USMLE).

Facilities

The Indiana University School of Medicine is located at nine sites throughout Indiana. The main campus is in Indianapolis. The other eight centers are in Bloomington, Evansville, Fort Wayne, Gary, Muncie, South Bend, Terre Haute, and West Lafayette. The Indianapolis campus includes the IU School of Medicine, School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, School of Dentistry, School of Nursing, Riley Hospital for Children and Indiana University Hospital of Clarian Health Partners, Wishard Memorial Hospital and the Roudebush VA Medical Center.

What do you like most about this school?

"Great opportunities to see so much at multiple hospital centers. Being a big program has benefits such as this." | Report Response

"P/F" | Report Response

"It's a research hub in the center of a few different hospitals. The satellite campuses add a unique flavor to the medical curriculum, so it's not a one size fits all education (this is a double-edged sword though!)" | Report Response

What do you like least about this school?

"Recently reforming its curriculum which has had some bad effects on education, but should improve things as time goes on." | Report Response

"Mandatory Lecture/Terrible Lecturers" | Report Response

"The info session after my interview revealed that 60% of the class does not get placed at the Indy campus (the location desired by most accepted students) but are "forced" to be at one of the satellite campuses. The core competencies that are threaded into the curriculum and so highly stressed on the webpage, during the interview, and by the co-chair of admissions turn out to be kind of ridiculous. From what the med students said, you can gain competencies pretty easily. Like, for instance, talking to interviewees like myself, on interview day or giving a 10 minute presentation to your fellow med students. If it's that easy to get them "checked off" and you don't really LEARN anything about the doctoring characteristics they embody, then what's the point?" | Report Response

How frequently do pre-clinical medical school activities have mandatory attendance?

"Always" | Report Response

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
