School Overview

School Info

The Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine (KSUCPM), formerly the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine (OCPM), is one of nine accredited podiatry colleges in the United States and is a four-year, graduate level medical college, granting the degree of Doctor of Podiatric Medicine. The Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine's mission is to educate students to be highly competent doctors of podiatric medicine who will excel in residency training. Founded in 1916, the College of Podiatric Medicine has graduated over 6,000 podiatrists who have made outstanding contributions to the field and study of podiatric medicine. KSUCPM has regional and national affiliations with over 50 world-wide hospitals and more than 300 private practitioners nationwide that provide externship training to KSUCPM students. Currently, KSUCPM maintains an average four year school enrollment of 425 students and typically graduates 85-100 podiatrists a year.

Curriculum

The curriculum consists of two components: the basic sciences and the clinical sciences. The basic sciences make up the first two years of study at Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine. During this time, students develop a competence for understanding the entire body and its many functions. The structure of the Basic Science curriculum is very similar to that of allopathic and osteopathic medical programs. A combination of didactic and laboratory coursework, that emphasizes the lower extremity, provides students with the knowledge necessary to deal with the complexities of the human condition. Classroom instruction and laboratory experimentation in the basic sciences enable the student to procure the needed competence to recognize a myriad of systemic diseases that are manifested in the lower extremity. The clinical curriculum at KSUCPM facilitates student rotations through the Departments of General Medicine, Orthopedics, Podiatric Medicine, and Surgery at the Cleveland Foot and Ankle Clinic and other clinical affiliations.

Facilities

There are a number of hospital affiliations and external programs that KSUCPM students experience as part of the third and fourth year curriculum. The medical education affiliation with the Cleveland Clinic Foundation provides students with rotations in internal medicine, endocrinology, orthopedics, and rheumatology. The Cleveland Clinic also co-sponsors Primary Podiatric Medical Residencies. University Hospitals Health Systems and Richmond Heights Hospital are host to a general surgery and general medical rotation for fourth year students, and are co-sponsors with the college in their Podiatric Primary Care and Podiatric Surgical Residency programs. Mandatory medical rotations are conducted for all fourth year students at Meridia South Pointe, the Department of Veterans Affairs Hospitals in Cleveland and Dayton, Mountain Home Tennessee, University Hospitals Health Systems, Richmond Heights Hospital, and Forum Health/Northside Medical Center.

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
