School Overview

School Info

The mission of the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and School of Pharmacy is to prepare students to become osteopathic physicians and pharmacy practitioners through programs of excellence in education, research, clinical care, and community service to enhance the quality of life through improved health for all humanity. The primary goal of LECOM is to educate students to become physicians practicing within the osteopathic concept. A secondary goal of the College is to educate and develop primary care physicians who will practice in the osteopathic tradition. The College imparts to its students a firm academic background enabling them to pursue advanced training in other fields of osteopathic medicine as well as primary care. The College encourages its students to participate in research to further advance their chosen profession.

Curriculum

The Problem-Based Learning Pathway (PBLP) at LECOM emphasizes student-centered, self-directed learning. Groups of eight students meet with a faculty facilitator two to three times per week. Faculty members do not "teach" in the traditional sense. Instead, they serve as facilitators. A series of cases focus on learning the basic sciences required to understand patient problems. Students then work independently and in small groups on learning issues before the next meeting, at which time the new information is discussed and refined in the context of the case."

Facilities

LECOM has constructed a 109,000 square foot building for the Florida campus. Classrooms will use the latest in smart-lecture hall technology with all A/V controls at the professor`s lectern. Small study halls provide meeting space where PBL groups meet to solve the problems presented by the patient cases. The Learning Resource Center has easy access to medical journals, texts and other library material. The new Florida Campus includes a wireless computer network so that anywhere on campus students can connect to lecture notes and presentations. Anatomy remains a key element of osteopathic medical training, and at the LECOM Bradenton, the anatomy lab offers prosections of cadavers, along with the latest in plastinated, human-anatomical specimens. This multi-purpose laboratory also provides learning and study facilities for microbiology and other basic sciences.

My undergrad GPA, though not awesome, is a 3.6. I felt embarrassed answering that question because I have not gotten anything lower than an A in 3 years. They did not even take the time to put a name with a file and then translate that into CONSTRUCTIVE questions. Considering their average acceptance GPA is a 3.2, I'm sure my 3.6 is not THAT low. "I really enjoyed the flexibility. PBL is ok. Having to come to school in the middle of the day really messed up my schedule. I would rather finish everything in morning and get home ASAP to start studying. Library worked like Propofol and knocked me out (I can literally only study at home or coffee shop). Good area. Lots of fun stuff to do on time off. I really didn't like how they forbade review books and they basically said "you can only use your PBL textbooks." Almost everyone ignored that and benefited from doing so. Hardly any research opportunities. Have to look hard in other places for a possible publication. Dress code-meh. Assigned seating (what am I 6 years old?). Clinical exam-basically tests your ability to memorize the entire textbook and not so much clinical skills. Basically learn how you want. PBL is good but you only get how much you get out of it. There are so many review material and question banks that a lot of time can be wasted just searching for the right one. I looked at a lot because there were almost no powerpoints. Overall-you're becoming a physician no matter which school. Just enjoy it as best you can and come out of it with a degree." | Report Response

"great for board scores, terrible for clinical years. you will receive minimal support in finding and securing rotations and those rotations will very likley require that you to live in several places through 3rd and 4th year. communication from the school is atrocious, vague and always threatening delaying your graduation (which is in June and required without exceptions)." | Report Response

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
