School Overview

School Info

The impact of the state of Georgia's only public medical school spans from its founding in 1828 as one of the nation's first medical schools to its current role optimizing health care in Georgia and beyond through education, discovery and service. The Medical College of Georgia, among the nine colleges of Augusta University, offers clinical training in approximately 135 sites across the state providing students experience in the full spectrum of medicine, from tertiary/quaternary care hospitals to small-town solo practices. The experience is anchored by MCG's main campus in Augusta as well as regional clinical campuses for third- and fourth-year students and a second four-year campus in Athens in partnership with the University of Georgia. roundsResearch initiatives focus on illnesses that affect most Georgians and Americans, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and obesity/diabetes. The sustained growth and productivity of the past decade is helping transform health in areas as diverse as childhood obesity, sickle cell disease and surgical recovery. MCG's clinical service zeroes in on the diverse needs of the state and nation as well, offering everything from frontline wellness care to complex care for the sickest adults and children. MCG faculty share their expertise with physicians and patients at about 80 clinics and hospitals statewide and utilize technology, developed at MCG, to virtually travel to the bedside of stroke patients.

Curriculum

Medical College of Georgia's curriculum integrates basic science and clinical experience with in-depth study and independent research throughout the years of medical school. MCG has affiliation agreements with major community hospitals within the state of Georgia that permit students to take some core clinical courses at these hospitals.

Facilities

The educational home of MCG is the J. Harold Harrison, MD, Education Commons, which opened in 2014. The Education Commons contains two, 300-seat auditoriums for medical students which are fully-integrated AV and IT for distance learning. The building also contains 13 small group rooms and 13 Learning Communities which contain study room for quiet collaboration or quick study, lockers for students, and a kitchenette for food/snack storage/preparation. The top floor of the education commons also contains a high fidelity simulation center with two, 8-bed open bay labs to simulate a hospital ward as well as a Standardized Patient Simulation Center with 30 exam rooms. Augusta University and MCG are based in Augusta, Ga., a beautiful city on the banks of the Savannah River, which offers an eclectic blend of big-city amenities with small-town ambiance. The Augusta area, which has a population of about a half million, is an established health care destination in the Southeast, with facilities that include the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center and Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center. Augusta is also home to the internationally renowned Masters® Golf Tournament.

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
