School Overview

School Info

The Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University is proud of building effective health care teams through our innovative, small group, problem-based learning method of instruction which has won us world-wide renown.

Curriculum

The COMPASS curriculum aims to ensure that our graduates have a good working understanding of biological, psychological and social mechanisms and processes, as well as their impact on health and disease, based on principles of learning drawn from cognitive psychology. Recent evidence from cognitive psychology about how people learn and use concepts suggests specific strategies which are very compatible with the basic approach to problem-based learning. These advances have guided McMaster curriculum planners to develop a curriculum that can ensure that concepts, once mastered, will be available to students when resolving clinical dilemmas. The COMPASS curriculum is structured to allow the integration of critically important fundamental concepts in medicine and affords an opportunity for students to have the time to practice applying these concepts to multiple different clinical problems.

Facilities

Our Faculty thrives on a team approach to health care that goes beyond the tenet of various professionals interfacing with the patient and family. This approach represents a true partnership between the community and the University. Within McMaster's health care group is a broad spectrum of staff, faculty, students, alumni and community supporters, as well as our strong academic hospitals Hamilton Health Sciences, St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton and St. Peter's Family of Services.

"- some medical quotes" More from this Member | Report Response

"Sorry, can't disclose! Prepare like you would for any other interview. Practice ethical questions, or situational (what would you do if...) type of questions, looking at both sides (all possible points), and come to a conclusion at the end. If you run out of ideas, they will ask follow-up questions to help you along." More from this Member | Report Response

"Cannot disclose. However, know yourself well and have a familiarity with difficult ethical issues. Always address both sides, but in the end, make a decision and stick with it." More from this Member | Report Response

"Cannot disclose. You should read the publications on the MMI just to get a feel for the process." More from this Member | Report Response

"Sorry, can't divulge." More from this Member | Report Response

"Sorry, I wouldn't be respecting the process if I provided any questions. Just a word of advice though, the practice MMI questions you find on the net are not the same as the questions asked at Mac. They are great practice...but the questions you will get will be like nothing you can find on the net. TRUST ME!" More from this Member | Report Response

"I'm holding a picture made up of felt shapes and I have to describe it to my partner so she can recreate the picture without having seen it. AFterwards we discuss our progress." More from this Member | Report Response

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
