School Overview

School Info

Commitment to serving science and society through outstanding research, education, patient care and community service form the foundation that makes Mount Sinai School of Medicine of New York University one of the world's foremost centers for medical and scientific training. Our focus on developing new approaches to teaching, translating scientific discoveries into improvements in patient care, and identifying new means to enhance the health and educational opportunities of our neighbors shapes the educational experience of our students.

Curriculum

For 40 years, Mount Sinai School of Medicine has fostered a cooperative environment that facilitates the development of the two most important skills a future physician can acquire: the capacity to critically evaluate new information and the flexibility to synthesize the information into adaptations in practice. We focus on treating the whole patient. Medical ethics, the social aspects of disease and cultural diversity are essential elements of study.

Facilities

To support our curriculum, we have pioneered some of the most advanced learning tools available to medical students anywhere. The Morchand Center for Clinical Competence is one such tool. The first training and evaluation facility of its kind in New York, the Center was established in 1991 to use state-of-the-art audiovisual systems and standardized surrogate patients to teach the human side of medicine. The Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs (CMCA) is a federally designated Center of Excellence that supports the diversity which has always been a hallmark of the School. The Center oversees minority affairs activities, culture and medicine programs, community service opportunities, and a variety of partnerships to encourage New York City high school students to consider careers in medicine and science.

What do you like most about this school?

"Great specialty mentoring. Pass-fail grading during first 2 years with all lectures recorded. The hospital has nearly every residency specialty, and it seems like most of the programs like to match Sinai students. Housing is very affordable and has good amenities, also provides a sense of community since most students live in the same building." | Report Response

"Very open to student feedback. Encourages clinical competency. Very supportive staff. Great study spaces. Great housing opportunities. Location." | Report Response

What do you like least about this school?

"I felt very little guidance from administration; it feels like it is assumed that you already know exactly what's going on and what to be doing. Will definitely try to sway you towards primary care during the first two years. Very heavily focused on a PC culture, perhaps too much. Can have kind of a clique-ish atmosphere among some of the students, but that is probably true of all med schools." | Report Response

"Nepotism is rampant with the Humanities in Medicine program. It can't be a coincidence that plenty of children of doctors at the school get in via a program that doesn't require them to take the MCAT" | Report Response

Please provide any other general comments on your school

"Overall it is a great place to go to med school. Tune out the annoying personalities and take advantage of the multitude of world-class physicians at Sinai who actively want to help out medical students." | Report Response

"The School is now called "Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai". It never truly had any affiliation to NYU." | Report Response

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
