School Info

MU`s School of Medicine is committed to providing high-quality medical education and developing physicians who will meet the health-care needs of Missourians. Our educational quality is achieved through outstanding teaching, research and patient care programs.

Curriculum

The curriculum at the University of Missouri School of Medicine emphasizes clinical reasoning, self-directed learning, collaborative learning and early clinical experiences. It integrates the basic sciences and clinical reasoning. In years 1 and 2, emphasis is placed on small group learning, with some lectures, and there are no department or discipline based courses. During the third year, seven core clerkships are required in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Surgery. It is during these core clerkships that students learn the fundamentals of good patient care and faculty are assessing that students are competent upon completion of the clerkship. These clinical experiences must be under the supervision of Columbia-based School of Medicine faculty or community faculty appointed through the School of Medicine. All students may take up to three core clerkships developed and approved by School of Medicine departments through the University of Missouri School of Medicine Rural Track Clerkship program. During the fourth year, three one-month clinical selectives, four one-month general electives and a one-month Advanced Biomedical Sciences are required. A minimum of four courses must be taken under the supervision of Columbia-based School of Medicine faculty as follows:

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
