School Overview

School Info

The School of Medicine?s principal responsibility is to offer an excellent, comprehensive program of medical education, biomedical research and health care. The ultimate goal of this program is improvement of the physical and mental well-being of citizens of the state, nation and, indeed, the world.

Curriculum

The curriculum in medicine consists of four academic sessions. During the two preclinical years, students learn the sciences basic to the study of medicine and participate in laboratory exercises, small-group discussion, computer-assisted learning, and independent study. The first year preclinical curriculum has been revised with the goal of increasing integration, improving the sequencing of course content, and providing earlier clinical experience for medical students in a manner similar to what already occurs in the second year. The third year involves full-time clinical exposure as students rotate through the major clinical disciplines and participate in the team care of patients in the University Hospitals and Clinics, Veterans Affairs Medical Center and various community settings. The fourth year consists of eight required calendar month blocks that may be taken anytime during the eleven months available from July through May. Fourth year clinical clerkships provide greater depth of study in a student`s anticipated medical specialty. Opportunities are available for review, advanced study and research in the basic science departments and for electives at another institution in this country or abroad.

Facilities

The Medical Center occupies a 164-acre tract of University-owned land in the heart of the capital city. The original eight-story building is now the nucleus of a major academic health sciences complex, more than quadrupled in size since its opening in 1955. The Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Health Related Professions and Dentistry all have their own buildings on campus. The dental education building and a major classroom addition were completed in 1977; a clinical sciences expansion to the medical school was occupied in 1978; and the Verner Smith Holmes Learning Resource Center was occupied in 1982. A new ambulatory care center?the University Medical Pavilion?was completed in 1987, and an addition to the Holmes Center in 1990. The Arthur C. Guyton Laboratory Research Building opened in 1993.

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
