School Overview

School Info

The Ohio State University College of Optometry is a leader in optometric education in the United States and is the only optometry program in Ohio. It is the oldest university-based program in the nation and was the first public university program to grant the Doctor of Optometry degree. We share the resources of the most comprehensive health sciences center in the U.S.

Curriculum

The fourth year curriculum includes three externship programs that provide extensive training and hands-on exposure to a variety of practice settings, including primary care, co-management clinics, VA hospitals, ophthalmology practices, and community clinical facilities, ensuring a diverse patient base. You will have the opportunity to see many hundreds of patients with different conditions including cataracts, glaucoma, diabetes, and other diseases. Clinical externships are available in Ohio and many other states as well.

Facilities

The new E. F. Wildermuth Optometric Research Clinic is scheduled to open in early 2007. This state of the art facility will allow the College of Optometry to continue to be at the forefront of vision research and patient care. The expansion of our research program will provide you with opportunities to learn from the many exciting studies taking place at the College.

Overall, how satisfied are you with this program?

Response Avg # Responders
10.00 1

0 = Terrible, 10 = World Class

What do you like most?

"We had an extensive curriculum at Ohio State involving state-of-the-art medical procedures (injections, lasers, MRI/FANG interpretation, etc), six business classes (contract negotiation, coding and billing, etc), and dynamic coursework (gerontology, public health, etc). We also had faculty and staff from all over the US and Canada who could cross-compare teaching styles and educate us on various modalities of medicine. As for location, I loved how OSU was in Columbus, OH (the state's capital). It was a bustling metropolitan area, had an undergraduate campus, and the college was located in the heart of the medical center." | Report Response

What do you like least?

"I didn't like how our facility was older. It was built in 1800s and was an old tuberculosis hospital. As a result, the facility itself was older-looking. According to the alumni magazine, there is currently a six-story, brand-new facility opening up for the college in 2020." | Report Response

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
