School Overview

School Info

Our mission is to educate health professionals and students in the biomedical sciences by conducting research, by generating a spirit of inquiry, and by serving the health needs of the people of southeastern Ontario, drawing on Queen's learning environment to enable our graduates to become the leading health professionals for Canada's rural, northern, and urban communities and to provide researchers and educators for the nation's future.

Curriculum

The educational program leading to the MD degree is central to the purpose of the Faculty. It must meet all the requirements for accreditation and prepare graduates for postgraduate training leading to licensure and certification by the College of Family Physicians or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons. Its special strengths are related to the opportunities for close, personal interaction between students and faculty members and for students to obtain particularly relevant, extensive, hands-on clinical experience under supervision, especially in ambulatory settings. There is great potential for students to benefit from greater integration of the clinical and basic sciences in the curriculum and from increased collaboration in education among the clinical disciplines.

Facilities

The provision of health care services in Kingston is presently being restructured and will change over the next two years. The Kingston General Hospital, with about 398 inpatient beds, will provide most inpatient care for the region. There will be a site for ambulatory care which at the present time is centered at the Hotel Dieu Hospital. Chronic care, geriatrics, palliative care and rehabilitation services are currently provided at St. Mary's of the Lake Hospital. All members of the attending medical staff have a University appointment.

" This was my first interview, so I have very little to compare it too. The interviewers were quite receptive and offered encouragement. The questions were the ones you would expect: why do you want to be a physician, why are you applying to meds after 3 years, ways you deal with stress, important qualities in a physician, what you want us to remember about you, what do you do for fun, what are two major health issues SASK needs to deal with, interspersed between these were a bunch of questions from my sketch (what you learned from it), your greatest failure, do you have any questions for us. Queen's was my first choice school going in, and my experience out here has solidified my choice. For those of you interviewing the next weekend: introspect a lot about the things I listed above and what they mean for you don't rehearse your answers too much, I think it will sound contrived if you do although it is real hard to not be nervous at all, this interview is just a friendly conversation" More from this Member | Report Response

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
