School Info

Rush Medical College students come from a wide variety of educational and social backgrounds. The committee on admissions considers both the academic and non-academic qualifications of applicants in making its decisions. Each applicant's academic achievement is assessed in light of such factors as the degree of difficulty of the program, the need to be employed while in school, the applicant's social and cultural background and other factors that may influence an applicant's academic record. Non-academic factors include the applicant's maturity, personal integrity, motivation, interests and other achievements. The committee places strong emphasis on the applicant's humanistic concerns, unique experiences, demonstrated motivation for a career in medicine and evidence of personal characteristics that promote the practice of modern and compassionate medicine.

Curriculum

The curriculum encourages pursuit of individual interests by emphasizing a solid foundation in the basic sciences and clinical medicine through a core of required preclinical and clinical courses and by offering a wide range of elective opportunities in our own Medical Center hospital and in the network of affiliated and associated hospitals. Throughout the program, students are encouraged to develop habits of self-education and enthusiasm for the lifelong study of medicine. The generalist curriculum, which is taught across the first and second years, has three components, which complement the basic science curriculum: Preceptorship experience, a Physical Diagnosis course and an Interviewing and Communication course. preceptorship experience is designed to provide students with an opportunity to observe and interact with primary care physicians and their patients in an outpatient office setting. The curriculum of the third and fourth years provides students with training in clinical skills, diagnosis and patient management in a variety of patient care settings. The third year includes required core clerkships in family medicine, internal medicine, neurology, pediatrics, psychiatry, obstetrics/gynecology and surgery. In the fourth year, students complete a four-week subinternship in family medicine, pediatrics, surgery or internal medicine, which gives students a chance to function at an advanced level similar to an intern, with close supervision by the faculty. A total of 18 weeks of elective study in areas of special interest to the student is also required.

Facilities

Students at Rush experience the advantage of training in a variety of clinical settings, including the urban academic medical center plus community hospitals located in the inner city as well as in suburban and rural areas of Illinois. Rush University Medical Center is the hub of a network of 10 affiliated and associated hospitals in a system which seeks to deliver total health care to 1.5 million people representative of all strata of society. Site coordinators and staff physicians at all teaching hospitals are members of the faculty of Rush Medical College.

"A little more continuity in interviewers would be nice. My interviewer was critically analyzing my application and made several negative comments. I heard from others that their interviewer didn't really ask them any questions just sat and talked with them. I really enjoyed that such an effort was made to match interviewers with candidates that had something in common. That was a welcome and nice touch." More from this Member | Report Response

What do you like most?

"Early clinical exposure, seeing patients in first month of med school through volunteering and preceptor" | Report Response

"Broad exposure to pathology- rotations through urban academic center, cook county hospital (huge inner city safety net hospital- clinical experience here is unbeatable)- plus opportunities to work in inner city health clinics and suburban ambulatory primary care" | Report Response

"clinical curriculum is excellent as Rush is a top hospital in the country. Definitely a hidden gem as it does not have the name recognition of other places because it is a small school with no undergrad or large grad programs. Also very down to earth classmates who are engaged and like to learn, but also have a good time. Not a class full of pointdexters." | Report Response

"I love the the faculty, the students, and the location. The faculty will bend backwards to help you. They are extremely accessible and really want to make sure you are learning. The same can be said for the students. There is no feeling of competitiveness - everyone wants to see everyone else succeed and is very down to earth. Chicago is also an incredible city and they are building a whole new hospital!" | Report Response

"close-knit community" | Report Response

"The people" | Report Response

What do you like least?

"Administrative disorganization" | Report Response

"No association with undergrad- so not as much infrastructure" | Report Response

"preclinical classes, but they have changed curriculum" | Report Response

"Technology is a little behind, but they are working on it." | Report Response

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
