School Overview

School Info

This is a new era in which innovative approaches to medical education are required to prepare physicians who can integrate the healing power of the doctor-patient relationship with rapidly expanding developments in scientific knowledge, technology, clinical practice, and health care delivery systems. No medical school is more poised than Rochester to take this leadership role.

Curriculum

The Double Helix Curriculum takes the application of adult learning principles to a higher-level emphasizing problem-based learning and integrating instruction across disciplines and between the basic and clinical sciences. Furthering this integration, there are six named Themes throughout the curriculum. These important topics each have specified learning objectives in courses throughout the Double Helix Curriculum, and as with traditional courses and clerkships, there are faculty directors for each of the six themes. These themes are: Prevention, Health Systems, Nutrition, Ethics and Law, and Aging.

Facilities

Today, that concept of physically integrating patient care and academics under one roof is still going strong. The main campus of the University of Rochester Medical Center covers over 4.4 million sq. feet of space. Strong Memorial Hospital covers 1.6 million sq. feet, the School of Medicine 2.1 million sq. feet, and the School of Nursing and the Eastman Dental Center about 100,000 sq. feet each.

What do you like most about this school?

"Excellent educational opportunities. welcoming atmosphere. great if youre pursuing neurology or orthopedics." | Report Response

"There are so many opportunities here. Whatever your area of interest (or curiosity) it is very easy to find a faculty member who would be happy to have you work with them. Also doing a family medicine-type clerkship in the first two years is great - you learn a lot plus it keeps you motivated and you can see the material learned in class in a clinical perspective." | Report Response

What do you like least about this school?

"third year grading system is problematic. The school operates on a 20% honors, 30% High Pass and 50% pass and the grades are almost entirely based on evaluations (some clerkships consider SHELF to be worth 20% but all require passing this exam). Since evaluations are highly subjective and entirely dependent on who is evaluating you, the grading system is neither accurate nor precise which means that you can get unlucky even if you are attractive and charming. You may find that comparable institutions (Brown, Boston, Dartmouth, Tufts, etc) do much better in the match." | Report Response

"Too much class time. While lectures aren't mandatory, there are mandatory small group activities more days than not. The amount of time is part of the downside of doing more intense clinical work during your first two years." | Report Response

Please provide any other general comments on your school

"The school has a decent reputation in almost every regard and a deserved excellent reputation in education. There are many opportunities to take advantage of at UR but be aware that you may end up with a less than desirable match or be unable to go for a competitive specialty given the unfortunate grading system." | Report Response

"Most students are here because they want to be at this school in particular, whereas I feel some schools in say nyc get students who are more enthusiastic about the area than the school. There is a lot of individual support here, both from the faculty as well as fellow students checking in on each other." | Report Response

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
