School Info

St. George’s University was founded in 1976 on the tiny island of Grenada in the Caribbean, and is now a recognized leader in global medical education. The University provides unique cross-cultural and international learning experiences to faculty and students from more than 140 countries, and has produced more than 11,000 physicians, who have practiced medicine in 50 countries across the world. In its over 35 years of academic achievement, St. George’s School of Medicine students and graduates have continually demonstrated excellence in all measures of testing. In 2012, the overall first-time pass rate on the USMLE Step 1 for St. George’s students was 97%, marking the fourth consecutive year that SGU’s overall first-time pass rate on the examination surpassed 90%. These students have come to SGU from 37 countries, with Canadian students achieving an impressive 100% pass rate. St. George’s University often places students into prestigious and diverse US residencies every year and they are often matched in the positions of their choice, including sought-after residencies, such as surgery, radiology, orthopedics, neurology, and emergency medicine. By one year after graduation, 97% of reporting US eligible 2011 graduates have received US postgraduate training positions.

Curriculum

St. George’s University provides a wide range of entry options and an extensive foundation for students with varied academic qualifications in the three-year premedical and four-year MD programs that lead to the Doctor of Medicine degree. Students may enter St. George’s seven-year Bachelor of Science/Doctor of Medicine program after high school through programs such as those offered through affiliations with the New Jersey Institute of Technology and Caldwell College. However, most students from North America who hold a bachelor’s degree with the appropriate premedical courses enter directly into the four-year medical program. The majority of St. George’s medical students will begin their study on Grenada’s True Blue campus. However, the Keith B. Taylor Global Scholars Program provides students with an opportunity to spend the first year of the four-year medical program in Newcastle, United Kingdom, on the Northumbria University campus. Immersed in the UK culture, students follow a program identical to the first-year program offered in Grenada, further encouraging their international experience. The clinical sciences take place in the final two years. All students complete clinical training in the University’s 60+ affiliated hospitals and clinical centers in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, all of which are done on services with approved postgraduate training programs. An exciting option beyond the stand-alone MD degree, dual MD/MPH, MD/MSc, and MD/MBA degrees are available to St. George’s medical students. Dual degree graduates are able to participate in a wide range of classes with practical exercises that hone many of the skills required to positively impact private practices, rural hospitals and health care systems, multifaceted large hospital systems, and more.

Facilities

The stunning True Blue campus in Grenada is the heart of the University. This $250+ million state-of-the-art University community is located on the southwestern corner of Grenada, on a peninsula overlooking the Caribbean Sea. The wireless-enhanced campus has recently seen the construction of more than 65 new buildings, including a library, anatomy labs, dormitories, lecture halls, and a research institute. The campus houses over 2,000 students. Free bus transportation is available from 6 am to 2 am to accommodate those students living off campus in various areas of the island.

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
