School Info

Tulane University Health Sciences Center is in the midst of a spectacular renaissance and, as a result, has become a most interesting place to study medicine. While much can be said about the faculty, curriculum, research programs, facilities, and other components of the Health Sciences Center, there can be no doubt that what has made Tulane University School of Medicine special is its student body, arguably the most diverse of all the nation's medical schools. The diversity of students, combined with an open and cooperative faculty, has led to the development of a true academic community, a community in which students learn in a non-hostile environment, with the help of friends and colleagues.

Curriculum

The School of Medicine offers an outstanding curriculum that is designed to prepare students for any field of medicine they wish to pursue upon graduation. There is an excellent balance between basic and clinical sciences with an emphasis on the attitudes, behaviors and clinical skills necessary to effectively practice medicine. The courses and clerkships can be reviewed at: www.som.tulane.edu/courses.html

Facilities

Founded in 1834, Tulane University School of Medicine is the 15th oldest medical school in the United States. Today the medical school is but one part of the Tulane University Health Sciences Center, which includes the School of Medicine, the Tulane University Hospital and Clinic, the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, the University Health Service, the Tulane Regional Primate Research Center, the U.S.-Japan Biomedical Research Laboratories, and the Tulane/Xavier Center for Bioenvironmental Research. Most components of the Health Sciences Center are located in the heart of historic New Orleans, near to the Vieux Carre (French Quarter), Aquarium of the Americas, the Louisiana Superdome and other major attractions.

What do you like most?

"Being from New Orleans, I love that TUSOM cares deeply about our local community and strives to care for our disadvantaged populations. Even as first or second-year students, we had the opportunity to gain valuable experience interviewing and examining patients by volunteering at the various student-run clinics located throughout New Orleans. The faculty are incredible practitioners and teachers who want to see you succeed; however, they expect students to take initiative, display an appropriate level of self-reliance, and be advocates for themselves. TUSOM was a great choice for me because I tend to learn the basics better on my own and rely on instruction to clarify points or misunderstandings. If you are a student who typically needs a rigid structure or constant hand-holding, then other programs may be a better fit" | Report Response

"School goes way out of it's way to make sure the students are as happy as possible. While we pay a ton for tuition we do get a lot of amazingly planed events with lots of free booze." | Report Response

"Student body is amazing and supportive." | Report Response

"As far as I can tell there is no other school that provides as many leadership and clinical opportunities to first and second year students. Also, the pass/fail system means that you can enjoy your classmates and your surroundings without having to constantly scrounge for extra points." | Report Response

"I like the environment set up by the faculty, administration and students. My classmates come from diverse backgrounds and have more life experience than I was expecting to see." | Report Response

"Tulane has a wonderful, laid-back atmosphere (for a medical school). The faculty really holds your hand through the first year, most of the class is easy to get along with, and it's in New Orleans!" | Report Response

What do you like least?

"Tuition is very expensive, but if you ask for financial assistance you will get it! The facilities are aging and in need of renovation (TUSOM definitely tends to care more about experiences rather than new and shiny things). Also, some students who are used to a high level of stability and organization find our administration frustrating at times." | Report Response

"Costs so much money and sometimes I feel like the school lacks things like good career guidance. This would be okay but we pay so much money, for what??" | Report Response

"Clinical rotations can be crowded." | Report Response

"Curriculum changes take a long time to move forward." | Report Response

"While I think the schools social agenda is important, having it forced on me on a daily basis can be tiring." | Report Response

"It's hard to pick a negative, though the price is certainly steep." | Report Response

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
