School Overview

School Info

The College of Medicine was established in 1819 and is considered the oldest medical college west of the Allegheny Mountains. As a medical school, we are known for our strong clinical program, student services, and research. We have an exceptional list of alumni and current and past faculty who have made considerable contributions to medicine and the medical sciences. The University of Cincinnati will give you the resources, the experiences, the insight and the knowledge necessary for you to also make your mark in medicine.

Curriculum

Using an integrated curricular approach and a variety of teaching modalities such as lab, small group discussion, team-based learning, and lectures, the first two years provide students with the scientific and humanistic principles of medicine including the application of those principles to medical practice. The major focus of Year 1 is the normal structure, function, and development of the human body. Year 2 emphasizes the basis and mechanisms of human disease. During Year 3, students rotate through seven core clerkships including Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Psychiatry, OB/Gyn, Surgery, and Radiology. Students also have the opportunity to begin exploring career options by participating in three specialty clerkships of their choosing. In Year 4, students clinical skills are honed during their Acting Internship and required Neuroscience selective. Students also choose from over 100 elective offerings, some of which are clinical, while others expose the student to the ways in which medicine fits into society.

Facilities

The College of Medicine is one of the leading academic health centers in the nation. The college is housed in the Medical Sciences Building (MSB). The Medical Sciences Building serves as the center of many of the activities within the Medical Center at large. Admissions, Student Services, The Office of Research and Graduate Education, Academic Information Technology & Libraries are all housed within MSB.

What are your suggestions for the admissions office?

"Honestly I can't think of any improvements you could make to the interview day. It took slightly longer to hear back than what we were told but that's how things go sometimes so it wasn't a big deal. Also make sure you tell people that there is a key chain and a piece of paper inside the water bottles; several other applicants and I put water in them without looking and ended up with a paper and metal slushie." More from this Member | Report Response

"Give a longer time for tours, felt like I only saw a small portion of the school. Tour guide was great though." More from this Member | Report Response

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
