School Info

The University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry, as a part of the continuing tradition of Catholic education, is committed to provide quality dental care to our patients and to serve as a source of information and education to the community. Through our dedication to excellence in teaching and research, the School of Dentistry strives to develop technically and diagnostically skilled, scientifically based, socially and ethically sensitive dental professionals who are committed to continued professional growth and development.

Curriculum

The successful completion of the dental curriculum leads to the Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degree. The curriculum is divided over four academic years. The academic year begins in late August and ends in late July, with a vacation period in August. Graduation is in May. The timing and sequence of courses are designed to develop a biomedical and preclinical knowledge base prior to the start of clinical patient care. The clinical periods provide the time necessary to develop the applied knowledge and technical skills essential for a person to enter the practice of general dentistry. The curriculum and course content are constantly being reviewed and improved to present the most current information and trends in dentistry.

What do you like least?

"We are writing this to express our disappointment with our experience over the past four years at UDM Dental. As students, we have constantly been disrespected and ignored by the administration and various faculty members throughout our time at the school. Throughout our didactic years, we constantly asked for changes in our exam schedules and other components of our classes to make our time just a little stressful, every time we were denied and laughed at. We are given only 2 weeks to study for Part 1 of the boards while other programs give their students more time. The failure rate for our students taking Part 1 skyrocketed to what we have heard was approximately 30% for the Class of 2021. The school still hides this. The only changes that were made were that incoming classes after us were given assigned seating where students had to stay in their assigned spots in the lecture hall for the entire year, something none of us had even heard of since middle school. These complaints are minor compared to UDM’s clinical experience. The dean tells us that “it is normal for 25% of students not to graduate on time”, this is unheard of elsewhere across the country. Of a class of 141, for the dental school not to realize that keeping 35 students every year past the expected graduation date is an indictment of their policies and requirements is everything that needs to be said about the school. No other school that we are aware of has such a high rate of students failing to graduate on time. The clinic director and the administration actively work to ensure that students do not graduate on time. Whether it is by raising requirements or constantly making changes in order for students to fail, we have always been fighting with our clinic administration. We have to actively pay for our patients’ treatments out of pocket in order to meet requirements, as the Detroit population cannot afford the school’s prices. If any student remains in the clinic past a certain date, the school charges them a daily fee of approximately $300. To prove this point even further, as the vast majority of dental schools have made adjustments to their requirements during the COVID-19 crisis so that the majority of their students can graduate, UDM dental has not. They are trying to force approximately 90% of students to return to one of the worst affected areas of the country to perform work on patients or typodonts to “meet requirements”. We are being prevented from applying for licenses or getting jobs because our clinic administration “does not like to be compared to other schools”. They are telling us to take out additional loans to fund our prolonged stay. The school wants us to return sometime in the end of May or possibly June (we still have no clear plan communicated to us as of today), and actively work with no guarantees to our safety or the safety of our patients. To make matters worse, they are actively posting on social media giving the appearance that the Class of 2020 has graduated. This is a complete lie and embarrassment. Students have been targeted for writing negative reviews of the school and threatened with lawsuits, which is why we are remaining anonymous. All we ask is that you please heavily consider other dental schools before attending or applying for UDM. We have been hung out to dry by this school over and over again and do not want to appear to be supportive of an administration and program that has lied to us so many times. We are completely saddened and embarrassed with our education. Sincerely, Students of the Class of 2020 and Students of the Class of 2019" | Report Response

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
