School Overview

School Info

The University of Minnesota Medical School was founded in 1888 to serve the health care needs of Minnesota. As one of the largest medical schools in the country, the University of Minnesota Medical School trains more than 70 percent of Minnesota's physicians and provides care to nearly 1 million patients across the state. Our students have the opportunity to excel through innovative research and state-of-the-art training, and the opportunity to provide care through affiliated hospitals and clinics across the state. We are committed to diversity and training physicians to meet the needs of diverse communities. We are focused on helping deliver better outcomes to patients more efficiently, and improving lives across our state and around the world. As the largest member of the University of Minnesota’s Academic Health Center, we help develop coordinated, interprofessional care models working alongside the School of Dentistry, School of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, School of Public Health, and College of Veterinary Medicine.

Curriculum

Key elements in the University of Minnesota Medical School curriculum include: - Integrating basic science and clinical learning across all 4 years of medical school - Direct faculty feedback for ongoing student learning and improvement - Active, experiential learning - Competency-based student assessment

Facilities

Located in the heart of Minneapolis, just minutes from downtown, our Twin Cities campus is a great place to learn and explore. With all the benefits of living in a big city (including major sports teams, world-class theater, and outstanding public transportation, to name a few), our supportive and inclusive community still manages to make this campus feel like a small town. Collaboration is key in the work that we do. Our major research partners come from within the Academic Health Center and University, while others can be found throughout Minnesota and the globe.

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
