School Overview

School Info

Named as one of the nation`s top 50 medical schools for primary care medicine by U.S. News & World Report, TCOM is a leader in training physicians skilled in comprehensive primary care. Approximately 65 percent of TCOM`s graduates practice primary care medicine (family practice, general internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology), helping reduce the shortage of physicians in our Texas communities. Many others successfully practice in specialty careers as diverse as aerospace medicine and vascular medicine.

Curriculum

The D.O. program curriculum is a four-year program leading to the degree of doctor of osteopathic medicine. In the first two years, students are taught the basic sciences through an integrated systems approach. The second two years resemble clinical education programs that are available in medical schools throughout the United States. In both phases, emphasis is placed on identification and treatment of illnesses, the promotion of health and wellness in patients, and on the necessity of treating each patient in the context of a wide variety of factors that influence health.

Facilities

Our health science center campus is a unique setting, bringing together our medical school with the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and the School of Public Health. This setting fosters a milieu for collaboration and scientific investigation. The campus continues to grow, with the opening of our new Center for BioHealth. This center will provide for novel research into the diseases that have afflicted mankind for millennia. Leading research on our campus includes studies into the spread of tuberculosis; Alzheimer`s disease and aging; diabetes and metabolic disorders; public health issues; and many more. In addition, the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine has been awarded extramural funding to establish a national Osteopathic Research Center on our campus. This opportunity will allow us to play a pivotal role in coordinating national studies, as well as performing specific studies into the distinctive osteopathic philosophy of healthcare and prevention that has played an important part in American medicine for over 120 years. We are fortunate to have affiliated hospital partners that offer a state-of-the-art environment for clinical education. These leaders in 21 st century health care include John Peter Smith Hospital, Plaza Medical Center, Cook Children?s Medical Center, Harris Methodist Medical Center Fort Worth, Baylor All Saints Medical Center, Texas Tech University Hospital-Odessa, University of Texas Health Center-Tyler, to name a few.

What do you like most about this school?

"Great Rotation sites, Good preparation for boards" | Report Response

"Very thorough 2nd year curriculum. Training at JPS is A+" | Report Response

"They have a great reputation with the hospitals in the area, and they can also be considered one of the best osteopathic schools in the nation. Their USMLE and COMLEX pass rates are above the national average, and they provide a good education overall." | Report Response

"The reputation is good, we do well on the boards, unlike many osteopathic schools we have many opportunities for research, although some of the research departments are highly political (be warned). There are many options for 3rd year rotations, which is good." | Report Response

What do you like least about this school?

"They have to many administration and red tape." | Report Response

"Difficult to balance both osteopathic curriculum on top of regular medical school didactics. Probably could have better clinical medicine instruction." | Report Response

"There have been some recent changes that require attendance in second year classes. I feel like I am being quizzed and tested to death in second year. There are also many instances of unprofessional conduct among my classmates, but this seems to be isolated to my class." | Report Response

"High pressure environment, facilities are new and pretty but not very functional, administration seems in disarray. Unlike many (most?) medical schools we do NOT have course syllabi with all the information we need to know, so we have to hunt for all information from textbooks ourselves during 2nd year." | Report Response

Please provide any other general comments on your school

"Great school with a strong match list. One of the best DO schools." | Report Response

"Probably doesn't get the credit it deserves. Quality of graduates tend to be very good physicians and go to good residency programs." | Report Response

"I would say if you want to go to an osteopathic school, choose TCOM. And if given the chance, I would choose TCOM again over several of the other Texas schools." | Report Response

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
