School Overview

School Info

With a tradition dating back to 1885, the Keck School of Medicine of USC is the oldest school of medicine in Southern California. Here, you’ll discover a long tradition of innovation and community service. We are dedicated to improving the quality of life for individuals and society by promoting health, preventing and curing disease, advancing biomedical research and educating tomorrow’s physicians and scientists.

Curriculum

Our MD curriculum has been designed over time to give students the best foundation for their future specialty choices. Students not only study medical science, but they also work closely with faculty mentors to learn how to form relationships with patients, build a practice, and serve diverse communities. The curriculum is delivered in a case-centered format with the integration of small-group learning sessions, directed independent study and newer instructional technologies.

Facilities

Located on USC’s Health Sciences Campus, just east of downtown Los Angeles, the Keck School of Medicine of USC is part of the Keck Medicine of USC medical enterprise. Our world class medical facilities, which include the Keck Hospital of USC, Norris Cancer Hospital and USC Verdugo Hills Hospital, are staffed by more than 600 physicians who serve as faculty a the Keck School of Medicine.

The LAC+USC Medical Center is one of the largest acute care hospitals in the United States and has been the primary training facility for the School of Medicine since 1885. As the largest single provider of healthcare in the County, LAC+USC provides the community with more than 28 percent of its trauma care.

The Keck School of Medicine of USC is also home to several research institutes and centers, including the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute, the Eli and Edythe Broad Center for term Cell research and Regenerative Medicine at USC, the USC Institute for Genetic Medicine and the Saban Research Institute and the USC Institute for Neuroimaging and Informatics.

The Keck School of Medicine strives to rank among the top private research medical schools in the nation. This will be achieved through groundbreaking discoveries in basic science and clinical research, targeted to prevent and relieve human suffering and enrich the human mind and spirit, as well as excellence in the school’s education of the next generation of academic clinicians and basic scientists. The delivery of advanced university-level patient care, measured by breakthroughs that fundamentally change the practice of medicine, will be the fruit of success in the school’s patient care missions and will secure its reputation for excellence. Many see the 21st Century as the golden age of biomedical research. The Keck School will position USC for leadership in this new era.

"Tell me about yourself (both asked this)" More from this Member | Report Response

"What single accomplishment are you most proud of?" More from this Member | Report Response

"How have you demonstrated the ability to resolve conflict in the past?" More from this Member | Report Response

"This is by far the chillest interview I have ever had. Both the faculty and student interviewers were the two sweetest people I've encountered during the 2011 cycle. I've talked to other applicants about their interview experience and everyone on our interview day had a positive experience, so those of you preparing for this interview, DO NOT stress out. I know it's easier to say than do, as I was in your position two weeks ago stressing about the interview. But trust me, this interview is really relaxed. They ask you very generic closed interview questions: Tell me about yourself, why do you want to be a doctor, questions pertaining to your family. All other questions stemmed from my responses to those three questions. Good luck to you all and my only advice to you is to be urself." More from this Member | Report Response

"Tell me about yourself (expect this, as the interview is completely closed file. They know nothing about you yet)." More from this Member | Report Response

"It was totally a conversation. Be ready to tell your story and then follow up with interesting details." More from this Member | Report Response

"What would someone else say your weaknesses are?" More from this Member | Report Response

"Tell me about yourself: literally the only direct question my faculty interviewer asked me. After that one question, all the questions from my faculty interviewer just naturally presented themselves (such as, tell me more about that). It was a great conversation, and basically the opposite of my student interviewer, who grilled me with many, many direct questions and hypothetical situations. My faculty interviewer closed up with: Anything else you want the admissions committee to know?" More from this Member | Report Response

"Tell me about yourself, very open." More from this Member | Report Response

"Faculty: What is a socio-ethical problem that concerns you?" More from this Member | Report Response

"interview one: I had to be there super early for this one, i am surprised i was able to make it. tell me about yourself? have you done any research? how have you been involved in your community? what do you feel about the healthcare bill? If you could give four suggestions to Obama what would you say? where do you see yourself in ten years, please be specific? what are you looking for in a medical school? how many schools have you applied to? how many schools have you interviewed in? how many have you got a response? which ones? " More from this Member | Report Response

"Both of my interviews were very conversational. I was lucky that neither tried to grill me. Student: Where are you from? Tell me about yourself? Why do you want to be a doctor? What experiences have shown you that you want to be a physician? What did you do for fun in college? Is there anything else you want me to know? A campus tour. " More from this Member | Report Response

"What are your strengths?" More from this Member | Report Response

"Tell me about yourself / why do you want to practice medicine?" More from this Member | Report Response

"What do you think is your greatest achievement during your lifetime?" More from this Member | Report Response

"Student Interview: Tell me about yourself. Why medicine? What do you do for fun? What books have you read recently? Why do you want to come to USC? Do you have any questions for me? Overall, the interview was very relaxed, conversational, and put me at ease for the rest of the day." More from this Member | Report Response

"Since it was closed file, both interviewers asked me my mcat, gpa, major, etc. Then the classic, "tell me about yourself" question." More from this Member | Report Response

"Discuss an ethical situation that you've given thought to. " More from this Member | Report Response

"What are your greatest strengths and weknesses?" More from this Member | Report Response

"Give me a topic, any topic, within the health care system and tell me what you think of it?" More from this Member | Report Response

"Tell me about yourself (The interviews are completely blind, so it makes sense to start out with this)" More from this Member | Report Response

"How did you come to choose medicine." More from this Member | Report Response

"Why USC?" More from this Member | Report Response

"How will you and your partner deal with the demands of medical school in terms of time it will take away from your relationship?" More from this Member | Report Response

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
