School Overview

School Info

The College of Medicine, one of the four colleges of the University of South Florida Health Sciences Center, admitted the first class of medical students in 1971. The program and curriculum expanded from the M.D. degree to include a MD/Ph.D. program in medical sciences, an MD/MPH degree, residency programs in various specialties and sub-specialties, and numerous special fellowship programs of both clinical and scientific specialized training. The College of Medicine is an academic community of scientific and educational excellence with leadership in medicine, medically related research, and highly specialized medical care services. The faculty is dedicated to programs of education, research, and patient care, while providing its students with educational experiences of the highest quality.

Curriculum

The curricular program of the College of Medicine is one in which there is integration of basic science and clinical medicine across all four years: more basic science is emphasized earlier in the program and more clinical medicine is emphasized later in the program. Through careful planning, an effort will be made to use the fundamental knowledge of the basic sciences in a meaningful relation to career goals in medicine. Although during the first and second years the emphasis will be on the sciences basic to medicine, clinical medicine is well integrated into the curriculum. Clinical medicine will be the focus during the third year. The opportunity to advance in both fields in a correlated fashion will be offered in the elective period of the fourth year. The introduction of physical diagnosis and clinical medicine in the first and second years and the opportunity to select basic science electives during the elective year, are of special significance for modern medicine since there is widespread recognition that delay between scientific discovery and its clinical application is too long and must be shortened. It is expected that graduates of the present program will have less difficulty in retaining a true feeling for a close relationship between basic medical science and its clinical application.

Facilities

The Health Sciences Center and the college have strong ties with other university programs and certain programs have achieved national and international recognition. Relationships with other Health Sciences Center colleges, teaching hospitals, the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute, and other disciplines within the university provide a very strong academic and research base. The college is fully accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education for the maximum period.

The most interesting question was: based on all of the negative issues facing the medical practice, especially in Florida, what makes you still want to become a doctor? I almost had to fight to get a few words in." More from this Member | Report Response

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
