What do you like most about this school?

"New hospitals. Excellent administrative staff. Superb clinical experiences and residencies." | Report Response

"Excellent range of clinical opportunities and extremely easy to get specialty-specific exposure early on. We have a strong career counseling/development program with easily approachable student deans to help with all aspects of being a medical student and getting into residency." | Report Response

"Amazing faculty who are world class researchers and experts in their fields. Also, the clinical experiences at Parkland are second to none." | Report Response

"Pass/Fail for the first semester (and true pass/fail, which means no internal ranking). The staff actually listens to the students for example the library now has 24 hour access because students wanted it. World class faculty, being lectured by Nobel prize winners as well as experts in their field (especially for things like lipid synthesis)." | Report Response

"Great support, great mentors, lots of help, and the prestige associated with the school doesn't hurt." | Report Response

What do you like least about this school?

"Hospitals can be somewhat far from each other" | Report Response

"Pre-clinical basic sciences are severely lacking in quality and organization. While the curriculum lay out is changing, it is really not content, but execution that is the weakest. Lectures are uneven and the syllabus has frequent typos and internal contradictions; similarly, you will find lectures that state contradictory information. I feel the courses are overall poor quality. The pre-clinical training was not very strong and most students slack off on it because it was not graded. Skills clinics and pre-clinical training are unorganized and we had to rely on facebook to communicate where exactly we should show up and what we should expect to do. Exams are written more to elicit a curve than prepare you for STEP. Pre clinical will be pass fail starting in 2015 so maybe that aspect will improve, but it was extremely frustrating during 2nd year." | Report Response

"The workload was excessive at time especially during the preclinical years, but it did force you to learn the infomation needed to ace the boards." | Report Response

"It can be a little crazy to be taking anatomy and biochemistry at the same time but pass/fail helps. The school is in a decent area, but if you don't like in the apartment community run by the school it can be difficult to find places to live that are affordable and safe (I imagine this would be true for any medical school in a city)." | Report Response

"Long class hours." | Report Response

Please provide any other general comments on your school

"Most of the time, I wish I had looked closer at other schools before coming here. I had a great interview day and liked what I saw, but overall, I don't think it has been a good fit. The curriculum is usually not very challenging and volume overload is the only thing that really pushes you. As a non-traditional student, I think somewhere else would probably have been a better choice and given me more opportunities to engage in things that would have helped build my skill set outside of the standard medical setting. Leadership opportunities are pretty basic and leadership/management training skills are not addressed in any formal setting." | Report Response

"Painful when your a student, but in retrospect UTSW is an amazing place to learn medicine. I'm doing residency at a higher ranked institution, and I think their med students don't get anywhere near the experience I had. If Ihad to choose med schools again, UTSW would still be at the top of my list." | Report Response

"It is a great school!" | Report Response

How is the instructional faculty during pre-clinical years?

"Uneven. We have a few very effective lectures who have very well crafted syllabi; however, most (I would say 75%) are ineffective. We have several lectures each block where it is obvious that the presenter did not make the slides or the syllabus so it becomes difficult to get a grasp on what is important clinically and exam-wise. I am unsure about other schools, but I feel that we have a large proportion of non-MDs giving presentations. As a whole, this material is not as effectively presented and will often have no clinical (or STEP) relevance as compared to similarly taught material by clinical faculty. Pharm stands out to me as a course taught almost exclusively by non-MD, non-clinical staff which I had to re-teach myself for STEP and felt unprepared for 3rd year." | Report Response

"great-we are lectured by experts in whatever field/topic we are learning about." | Report Response

"Relatively Good. Some are phenomenal professors, while others confuse more than help. Overall, they are good." | Report Response
