School Overview

School Info

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio serves San Antonio and the 50,000 square-mile area of South Texas. It extends to campuses in the metropolitan border communities of Laredo and the Rio Grande Valley. More than 2,700 students a year train in an environment that involves more than 100 affiliated hospitals, clinics and health care facilities in South Texas

Curriculum

The Clinical Integration Course is an interdisciplinary course that extends through both semesters of the first year. This course integrates knowledge learned in the basic sciences with the clinical setting of patient examination and diagnosis. During the first month of the academic program, this will be the only course of the medical curriculum. Students will learn the basic skills of obtaining a patient history and performing a physical exam. The student will also have the opportunity to learn other basic skills such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation, sterile operating room technique, suturing, and phlebotomy, and will be introduced to such subjects as doctor-patient relationships, patient confidentiality, and medical ethics.

Facilities

The Health Science Center has more than 2 million square feet of education, research, treatment, and administrative facilities. The University employs approximately 5,000 faculty & staff, with a budget of approximately $350 million. Many institutions in San Antonio serve as excellent resources for programs of the Health Science Center, providing training opportunities and laboratory space. These include facilities of the Bexar County Hospital District, Audie Murphy Division/ South Texas Veterans Health Care System, Christus Santa Rosa Hospital, Wilford Hall Medical Center, Brooke Army Medical Center, School of Aerospace Medicine, San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, Southwest Research Institute, and Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research.

What do you like most about this school?

"Great third and fourth year rotations. Faculty love to teach. University Hospital sees the worst of the worst in pathology. Culture is student-friendly and as a student you are expected to be hands-on and actively involved in patient care. You'll spend very little time standing in the corner shadowing. You will be well-prepared to become a great resident. Other things I love: flexible schedule MS1 & 2 with mostly optional attendance and recorded video lectures, 4th year is 100% electives, class collaboration and morale is great, MS2 ends in February thus giving you 4 months of extra time to do things like early rotations, step study, vacation, and research." | Report Response

What do you like least about this school?

"Class is very large (~210s). Even after four years I still don't know all my classmates. Also, the "new" preclinical curriculum (2012) is mostly very good, but there's a handful of required team-based exercises every week that I felt were minimally helpful." | Report Response

How frequently do pre-clinical medical school activities have mandatory attendance?

"~20% of the time" | Report Response

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
