What do you like most about this school?

"Clinical experience and pathology. You will see things in Detroit you won't see anywhere else. And because the hospitals are chronically understaffed, you will get to do more than many of your colleagues at other schools." | Report Response

"The quality of clinical rotations in third year is unmatched. The teaching at the affiliated hospitals that students rotate at combined with the volume and diversity of pathology is tremendous. Students leave Wayne State fully prepared to function as more than competent interns, often moreso than other programs that are viewed as more prestigious." | Report Response

What do you like least about this school?

"Generally unresponsive administration (this is changing fast). Poor coordination between/among lecturers in different topics- we often get taught the same thing multiple times. Teaching to step 2 rather than step 1." | Report Response

"The quality of the support staff working for student affairs, financial aid, etc. at times is frustratingly poor. It can be difficult to obtain things like transcripts, signatures for forms, etc." | Report Response

Please provide any other general comments on your school

"This school is known for its clinical medicine, generally putting students in the trenches. Also has ample research opportunities, and a vast array of residency options. School itself has passable facilities, no-frills working infrastructure, and key resources for students to succeed. Poor alumni network and utilization, poor class cohesion, but attendings know what going through Wayne means- and they know you will have solid clinical skills after this program." | Report Response

"Low cost of tuition, low cost of living, excellent clinical training, great residency placement and a recent boom/turnaround in the city of Detroit make the educational experience at this school highly desirable." | Report Response

Please describe the on-campus housing if available (i.e., cost, type - studios, 1-br, 2-br, etc.)?

"There are a number of housing options available, many of which are within walking distance of the school. Others are located in the more vibrant downtown, and students also live in the surrounding suburbs 15 minutes away (Royal Oak, Ferndale, Madison Heights, Southfield, etc. ) Housing prices are definitely rising as of late due to the popularity of moving downtown, but are still significantly lower than other major cities. Nice 1 bedrooms range from $600-$1,000. 2 bedrooms around $1,000-$1,600. But again, prices very widely and you can find places that are significantly cheaper and more expensive than this." | Report Response

How are clinical rotations scheduled? What are the required rotations?

"Students rotate at 1 of 4 different hospital systems (DMC, Henry Ford, Oakwood, St. Johns). The teaching at each is comparable and all great. Required rotations during 3rd year are Internal Medicine (2 months), Pediatrics (2 months), Family Medicine (1 month), Elective (1 month), OB/GYN (2 months), General Surgery (2 months), Neurology (1 month), Psychiatry (1 month)." | Report Response

What responsibility do med students have on the wards?

"Depends on the rotation. As an example in Internal medicine patients are usually required to carry 1 or 2 patients. They are expected to act as the primary provider for the patient. This includes pre-rounding on the patient, writing the note, putting in orders (pended orders in EPIC), presenting the patient on rounds, and signing out to the next shift. Obviously everything you do is run by the resident first, but being put in charge of every aspect of patient care is extremely beneficial in learning what its like to operate as a resident. Residency programs continue to comment on how well clinically prepared Wayne State students are to become residents." | Report Response

Post Graduation

How do graduates from this school fare in residency and clinical practice?
