School Overview

School Info

As of October 2008, the College of Dental Medicine is seeking initial accreditation of its dental education program (DMD program) from the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association. The Commission serves as the United States Department of Education-recognized programmatic accrediting body for dentistry. Approval of the DMD program by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) is pending as of October 2008.

Curriculum

The curriculum will be patient-centered; our learning environment will be student-centered. Our students will be treated as members of the profession from the very first day of school, with all the rights, privileges and, most importantly, responsibilities of any professional. Their highest priority will be the patient. Our graduates will be men and women who can gather and analyze information in a systematic fashion in order to provide patient-centered, evidence-based care. They will be technically competent practitioners who will get a head start on developing their skills in state-of-the art simulation clinics. Students will gain extensive clinical experience on campus and in various community-based settings. Our graduates will be life-long learners who are comfortable working in collaboration with other health care professionals to provide comprehensive care to a culturally diverse group of patients; including the very young, medically compromised, and ever growing population of mature adults. The curriculum will incorporate business, practice management, leadership and communication skills to enable them to be successful in their profession and in their communities. More importantly, our graduates will be good people, and proud to be graduates of Western University of Health Sciences.

Facilities

The school is planning two new facilities on campus. The first is an educational and research building; the second is a new patient care facility. Both facilities will be shared by students in medicine, dentistry, optometry and podiatry and will be designed to facilitate interprofessional education and patient care.

What are your suggestions for the admissions office?

"Overall I had a very nice experience there. But I felt bad for the students that are going to have the interviews after the tour and around lunch time. Maybe in the future, set up some more interview days so that less students are interviewed on the same day, and they could all enjoy the tour after the interview and lunch." About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
