School Overview

School Info

At the West Virginia University School of Medicine, we educate health professionals, provide thousands of people with medical care, and conduct lifesaving research. Our students work side-by-side with doctors and scientists in the University`s modern hospitals, clinics, and laboratories. They also have a chance to learn from professionals in practice at medical offices, clinics and hospitals across the state.

Curriculum

The WVU SOM provides a challenging curriculum that includes a variety of learning experiences including small group problem-solving, simulation-based learning, clinical experiences, and inter-professional learning opportunities beginning in the first year of school. Medical students spend the first and second year on the Morgantown campus; for the third and fourth year of the curriculum, students will be placed on one of our three campuses. In addition to course requirements, all students must complete 100 hours of community service prior to graduation, and successfully pass both Step 1 and Step 2 of the USMLE.

Facilities

Today, WVU`s Health Sciences Campus is a large, modern medical complex that includes Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, and Pharmacy, three hospitals, a physician office building, and state-of-the-art cancer and eye centers. The School of Medicine serves more than 2,500 students with a variety of educational programs -- including medicine, physical and occupational therapy, medical technology, physical therapy, exercise physiology, continuing medical education, and others. Faculty members provide advanced clinical care to more than 100,000 West Virginians throughout the state. The institution is making a major investment in new state-of-the-art facilities and improvements in education, research, and clinical care.

What do you like most about this school?

"IM faculty in the Morgantown campus are top notch. Most programs other than general surgery are diamonds in the rough. Avoid general surgery here at all costs." | Report Response

"I got in" | Report Response

"Morgantown is a nice place, perfect size." | Report Response

"The faculty are awesome, and we must have the most supportive student services office in the country. Our Deans actually take call to be available for us 24/7." | Report Response

"Cost of living is low in this area. Pass rates on boards are above average. In-state tuition is reasonable. Basic science teaching is very good." | Report Response

"Community and classmates" | Report Response

"Non-competitive atmosphere and a lot of interaction between students and faculty" | Report Response

"It feels like family at WVU. Everyone takes good care of students and has a lot of concern for how students are doing (no matter what year you are)." | Report Response

"The professors and staff are caring and friendly. It is the type of school that wants you to succeed" | Report Response

What do you like least about this school?

"Too much time wasted with additional "activities" that administration feels is important to our education when it has no bearing whatsoever on it. CPX (clinical performance examination) is a PRIME example. General surgery has a highly malignant attitude. They make residents and students feel terrible about existing, let alone being in medicine." | Report Response

"The reputation West Virginians have for being stupid is largely deserved. The average West Virginian is half as intelligent and half as productive as their counterpart in any bordering state. This applies to doctors and educators as well. I have really cheated myself by coming here." | Report Response

"Too many times, the Camtasia recordings mess up. Not nearly as reliable as they should be." | Report Response

"Week night football games that prevent access to the building because the stadium is right there." | Report Response

"The faculty and staff that are inclined to mistreat students do so with impunity. Teaching in the clinical years is not always a high priority. Class failure rate is often quite high. Students on the wards or in the clinic are often ignored and occasionally abused. Students have no recourse and receive no protection when they are mistreated. Communication between the administration and students (in both directions) is exceedingly poor. Mentoring is not promoted." | Report Response

"Longitudinal curriculum for 2nd year" | Report Response

"Nothing really" | Report Response

"They don't do a good job of orienting you to campus when you are new there. They offer some numbers to find housing, but they don't do more than that. Everyone did okay in the end though." | Report Response

"They split us up for clinical rotations so half your friends are several hundred miles away." | Report Response

Please provide any other general comments on your school

"Average school at best. Since it was the best option in the state, I am happy with my decision. The overall education was average, and the experience itself was slightly below average." | Report Response

"Geared toward production of barely-passable rural Docs." | Report Response

"This is an excellent program to become a great clinician. I learned so much about actually caring for people. I have been on some audition rotations and I was better prepared than any other students who were rotating." | Report Response

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
