What was the style of the interview?

One-on-one

What type of interview was it?

Open file

What is one of the specific questions they asked you (question 1)?

"Nothing extremely innovative; the general why MD/PhD, why UCSD, tell me about your research questions." Report Response

What is one of the specific questions they asked you (question 2)?

"New this year: student interviewers will try to find out how much you know about contemporary health care issues." Report Response

What was the most interesting question?

What was the most difficult question?

"Nothing extraordinarily difficult." Report Response

How did you prepare for the interview?

"Skimmed website, application, publications" Report Response

What impressed you positively?

"Possibly the most beautiful medical school campuses in the nation, UCSD prides itself (rightfully so) on its three free clinics where even first-year students can manage patients. There's a lot of inter-year interaction among the MSTP students, who are a very social group and can easily acquire a university-subsidised apartment with an oceanview. The interviewers seem to want to get to know who you are and if you'll fit into the UCSD atmosphere." Report Response

What impressed you negatively?

"I thought some of the information about the school given at informational talks could have waited until acceptances were issued. Even the undergrad campus isn't the party scene that I was expecting. The first two years are dominated by 8 to 6 lecture hours. Since most students hail from CA, if the attitude isn't your style it will be difficult to adjust. That said, I was thoroughly impressed by the school and would love to have the option to go there." Report Response

What did you wish you had known ahead of time?

"UCSD seems very open to alternative medicine." Report Response

What are your general comments?

"You'll arrive the day before your interviews to make a not-entirely helpful tour of the campus. Christine Moran will whisk you away to the Salk Institute in time for a beautiful sunset, and then you're immediately taken to one of UCSD's student-run free clinics. Interview day is jam-packed with interviews in typical SoCal laid-back style (although this depends on your specific interviewers and how well you know your research). UCSD takes care of your living and eating arrangements for the duration of your stay." Report Response
