Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery
Otolaryngology is no longer confined to the areas of ear, nose, and throat. It has become a comprehensive discipline of medicine and surgery of the head and neck region.
- Number of physicians in specialty - Small, less than 15,000
- Competitiveness of residency - Very high
- Years of training required - Five years, following a first year with at least nine months of surgery, emergency, critical care and anesthesia training.
- Subspecialty/Fellowship Training - A trend toward subspecialization is increasing. All residents have training in at least the seven recognized subdivisions: otology, rhinology, laryngology, allergy, head and neck surgery, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, and bronchoesophagology. A one or two-year fellowship following residency is available in any of the above subspecialty areas as well as a two year fellowship in otology-neurotology and pediatric otolaryngology.
